Support for Muslim Women and Girls
A safe space to unload, share advice, and break the stigma of mental health
The Our Voices ‘Sakinah’ project is designed to create a safe space for Muslim women in Tower Hamlets to share their challenges and experiences of mental health and wellbeing within their community.
The groups are designed to help break through the stigmas and taboos surrounding mental health.
You don’t have to have a mental health challenge to attend. People come to the groups to combat loneliness, make friends, share advice and just have fun. We do all kinds of activities and even go on day trips. To a lot of members, especially mums, it’s a little bit of “me time” in their week.
Where and when?
There are weekly sessions now taking place across three different locations within Tower Hamlets:
- Limehouse: The Yurt Café (Mondays)
- Whitechapel: Maryam Centre (Tuesdays)
- Bow: Open House (Wednesdays)
Who can join?
The groups are for Muslim women who are over 18 and live in Tower Hamlets.
What happens during a group?
Each session provides a place for women to share stories through the process of storytelling. We bring conversations of many topics including mental health, religion, parenting and an overall look on being a Muslim woman.
We provide many activities, from journaling, poetry, arts & crafts, religious discussions, and walks & sightseeing. The sessions are coproduced and designed to make heavy topics feel easier by bringing in therapeutic art workshops and opportunities for self-expression.
At the request of the members, we often invite guest speakers who are experts in their field.
Is it free?
Yes, the sessions are free. Most special days out are free too, though you may sometimes need to pay a small amount.

Zakat Support Fund from Islamic Relief UK
Over the past year, rising prices have put increasing pressure on many people living in Great Britain. As financial pressures rise, some people struggle to keep up with payments, or fall into debt.
A fund from Islamic Relief UK, designed for Muslims experiencing financial difficulties in the boroughs of Tower Hamlets, Newham, and Redbridge, the Zakat Support Fund provides assistance to those struggling to meet essential living costs or facing financial crisis.
